Software Selection Process

Selecting the right software for your small to medium business can be quite a daunting task. Today businesses are more and more reliant on technology to analyze and facilitate managing the business. Here are a few things to consider when starting a business with new business management software or upgrading:

  • Chose a software program that employs current technologies and continuously updates their software. This will allow you to stay competitive in terms of managing processes, generating meaningful reports, and dealing effectively with customers, vendors and company stakeholders.
  • Understand your business requirements and your business needs. Do you have outside investors that require financial statements with EBITDA calculations, or financiers that require GAAP compliant financial statements? What management reports to you require to make informed decisions about your business, or incentivize business unit managers to perform against agreed upon benchmarks? How is data entered or captured? What ecommerce integration consideration do you have?
  • Use a good Reseller or business systems integrator. This is key, and can make all the difference. A good reseller will help you to define your business requirements and chose appropriate software to suit your business needs.
  • Manage change effectively. Change can be stressful for people in the company. Understanding and dealing with this can go a long way having a smooth and successful implementing. Once a decision is made to purchase or upgrade to a new system, have the leaders in the business endorse and support the change. Reiterate amongst staff the benefits of upgrading, while ensuring some level of security. The most uplifting benefit I see in system upgrades is how people’s roles improve from mere data entry to include a greater ability to do data analysis – a more valuable and exciting proposition for a business owner.
